Installation
Drill clean through the hinge post at your layout marks. Insert the J-bolt so the pin (hook) projects from the gate side. Install a nut and washer on both sides of the post and tighten to set the projection and level. Repeat for the second hinge (and a third on large/heavy gates). Attach the gate’s 5/8″ female strap hinge onto the J-bolt pin and test swing; fine-tune by adjusting the nuts and washers.
Buying Guide
- Length selection: Shorter lengths (4-1/2″, 6″) suit typical pipe posts; longer (10″, 12″) reach through large wood or non-traditional posts.
- Hinge pairing: Use with standard 5/8″ female strap hinges on the gate frame for proper fit.
- Gate count: Most gates use two hinges; consider three on tall/wide or high-use gates.
- Alternatives: Lag-screw male hinges thread into solid wood; pressed-steel or malleable strap hinges bolt directly to pipe posts.
