Our Galvanized, Pressed Steel Butt Hinges are perfect for commercial and industrial grade gates. Also known as box hinges, butt hinges open 90 degrees, but can be made to open a full 180 degrees with an offset adapter. The heavy galvanized coating protects the underlying pressed steel from rust and corrosion, while the simple design provides for hassle free use. Install 2 hinges on gates under 8' tall and 3 hinges on gates that are over 8' tall, or very heavy.. For double drive gates, each leaf needs at least 2 hinges, and possibly 3 depending on size and weight.
Butt / Box hinges sit under your gate frame, supporting the frame's swinging motion. If you find that the hinge collar is cutting in to the gate framework, consider using a hinge bearing plug to bear the weight of the gate and preserve your hinges.

Installation
To install butt hinges, put the large end around your gate post and secure with the included bolts and nuts. Take the collar end piece off and put it around your 1 5/8" or 2" gate frame. The gate framework's horizontal rails should sit on top of the hinges so that they support the weight of the gate and facilitate a smooth swinging motion, so you will probably need an extension at the bottom of your chain link gate's vertical rail. The bottom hinge will sit just above the ground and the gate will slide along the circumference of the collar. If you find that the collar is cutting into your framework, then you can use a hinge bearing plug to sit between the hinge and the gate.
