Product Description
Galvanized Pressed-Steel Top Rail Sleeves — 1-3/8″ & 1-5/8″ Chain Link Splice Couplers (Professional Grade)
- Splice Unswedged Rails Fast — Slides over two rail ends to make a rigid, in-line connection
- Fence-Contractor Grade — Pressed galvanized steel chosen by professionals for durability and fit
- Clean, Low-Profile Joint — Smooth sleeve transition minimizes snags on tarps, slats, and windscreens
- Versatile Use — Ideal for top rail runs, mid-rail repairs, and panel builds
- Securement Options — Friction-fit; add two self-tapping screws per sleeve for extra hold (sold separately)
Make quick, professional-grade splices on chain link top rail with galvanized pressed-steel rail sleeves. Center the sleeve over the joint to restore strength and alignment in straight runs or repair sections without replacing full lengths. For terminations at posts, pair sleeves with pressed-steel rail ends or combo rail ends (truss). When a rail must pass through a line post, use a line rail (boulevard) clamp instead of a sleeve.
Why Choose This
- Professional finish — Tight fit and consistent sizing for straight, rattle-free splices
- Corrosion resistance — Hot-dip galvanized steel for long outdoor life
- Field-friendly — No special tools; optional self-tappers keep joints locked during wind loading
- Repair saver — Replace only the damaged section and sleeve the joint to reduce waste

Installation
Cut rails square and deburr. Mark center of the joint. Slide the sleeve halfway onto one rail end, bring the second rail into alignment, then center the sleeve over the seam. For extra security, pre-drill and drive two 1/4″ self-tapping screws (one on each side of the joint). Keep the seam facing up on top rails for a smooth look. For pass-throughs at line posts, use line rail clamps instead of a sleeve.
Buying Guide
- Match rail size: Choose 1-3/8″ or 1-5/8″ to match your rail O.D.
- Swedged vs. sleeve: If your rails are swedged (one end tapered), you can join without a sleeve; use sleeves for unswedged or repair work.
- Fasteners: Add 1/4″ self-tapping screws when wind screens/tarps are installed or the span is exposed to high winds.
- Terminations & bracing: Use rail ends (or combo ends for truss systems) at posts.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need screws, or is friction-fit enough?
- Friction-fit works on many straight runs. We recommend two self-tappers per sleeve when using windscreens/tarps or in windy sites.
- Can I use sleeves on bottom or mid rails?
- Yes—for inline splices. If a rail must pass through a line post, use a line rail (boulevard) clamp instead.
- Will these rust?
- The galvanized coating provides strong corrosion resistance. Touch up deep scratches to protect exposed steel.
- Are these the same as swedged rails?
- No. Swedged rails have a tapered end that slips into the next section; sleeves are separate couplers for unswedged or repair joints.
- What length are the sleeves?
- Approximately 6″ overall, sized to create a stable, low-profile splice.
Comparison
Option | Strengths | Considerations | Best For |
---|---|---|---|
Galvanized Top Rail Sleeve (this item) | Contractor-grade steel; quick splices; great for repairs | Adds a small external collar at the joint | Unswedged runs, field repairs, panel frames |
Swedged Top Rail | No separate coupler; clean inline look | Requires swedged stock; less flexible for repairs | New construction with matching swedged rails |
Color-Coated Sleeve | Blends with black/brown/green systems | Color option; verify match with framework | Aesthetic continuity on color-coated fences |

Too sloppy!
These sleeves were a full eighth oversize, and were super sloppy for my intended purpose. You should advertise them as what they are, 1 3/4. **Signet Response** Thank you for your feedback. The sleeves are meant for a 1 5/8" rail, and they are not meant to be a real tight fit. We will be happy to provide you with a full refund if you return them to us.
