Schedule 40 Pipe – Galvanized Heavy-Duty Round Fence Posts (1-5/8" to 8-5/8" OD)
- Full-weight Schedule 40 — a heavy-wall choice for fence posts, gate posts, and brace rail applications.
- Import or Domestic options — choose the pipe that fits your budget or “Made in USA” project requirements.
- ASTM F1083 compliant — both Domestic and Import Schedule 40 options meet ASTM F1083 for fence framework use.
- Hot-dip galvanized — corrosion-resistant finish built for demanding outdoor installations.
- Wide diameter range — offered from 1-5/8" through 8-5/8" OD in many standard lengths.
Galvanized Schedule 40 pipe is the industry workhorse for heavier-duty chain link posts and framework where rigidity, durability, and long service life matter. It’s commonly specified for commercial and industrial fencing, high-cycle gate openings, and installations that demand more strength than light-wall fence tubing.
We offer Domestic (Made in USA) Schedule 40 and Import Schedule 40. Both options meet ASTM F1083, so you can select based on specification requirements, sourcing preferences, and jobsite priorities.
Most Common Uses
- Chain link posts — line posts, end posts, corner posts, and terminal posts.
- Gate posts — stronger support for swing gates, cantilever gates, and high-cycle access points.
- Top rail & brace rail — heavier framework where spec calls for Sch 40 wall/weight.
- Bollards & protective barriers — pipe-based protection when required by the project plan.
- General outdoor structural builds — signage, fabricated supports, and fence-related steel structures.
Why Choose This
- Heavier wall for stiffer posts — helps reduce deflection and long-term movement.
- Spec-friendly for commercial work — designed for fence framework applications under ASTM requirements.
- Domestic or Import availability — meet “Made in USA” needs without losing Schedule 40 performance.
- OD-based compatibility — matches standard chain link fittings sized by outside diameter.

Schedule 40 vs. SF40 (SPS-40)
These terms get used interchangeably online, but they are not the same product and may not be accepted as substitutes unless your project spec allows it.
- Schedule 40 (Sch 40) — “full weight” pipe with Schedule-based wall thickness and weight per foot. It’s frequently referenced in fence framework specs and commonly tied to ASTM F1083 requirements.
- SF40 / SPS-40 — “high-strength fence framework” categories that typically use higher-yield steel to deliver strong performance with a thinner wall and lower weight than Schedule 40 at the same OD. These are often marketed specifically as strength-to-weight alternatives and are commonly associated with ASTM F1043 framework classifications rather than Schedule wall tables.
Rule of thumb: If your spec explicitly requires Schedule 40 and/or ASTM F1083, choose Schedule 40 that meets those requirements. If your spec allows “high-strength framework” (often written around ASTM F1043 categories) and you’re optimizing for handling weight while maintaining strength, SF40/SPS-40 may be an acceptable option. When in doubt, follow the written spec and submittal requirements.

Installation (Quick Steps)
- Select OD and post type (line vs terminal/corner/gate) based on fence height, spacing, and site conditions.
- Set posts plumb in appropriately sized footings per local code, frost depth, and wind exposure.
- Allow concrete to cure before tensioning fabric or hanging gates.
- Use OD-matched fittings (bands, caps, rail ends, sleeves) sized to your pipe diameter.
Buying Guide
- Domestic vs. Import — choose Domestic for “Made in USA” requirements, government projects, and strict submittals; choose Import for value-driven builds that still require ASTM F1083 Sch 40 compliance.
- Don’t undersize gate posts — wider/heavier gates typically justify a larger OD for alignment over time.
- Confirm fittings by OD — chain link fittings are sized by outside diameter, so match hardware accordingly.
- Plan freight early — pipe over 10'6" ships via flatbed freight and requires a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do both Import and Domestic Schedule 40 pipe meet ASTM F1083?
Yes. Both options meet ASTM F1083, so you can choose based on sourcing requirements and any additional specification language in your project.
What’s the difference between Domestic and Import Schedule 40 pipe?
Both meet ASTM F1083. Domestic pipe is offered for projects that require Made-in-USA sourcing and also meets Federal Specification RR-F-193/3E, Class 1, Grade A. Import pipe is also available and meets ASTM F1043 in addition to ASTM F1083.
Is SF40 (SPS-40) the same as Schedule 40?
No. Schedule 40 is a full-weight schedule wall/weight class. SF40/SPS-40 is typically a high-strength framework category designed to provide strong performance with less weight at the same OD. Always follow the written project specification.
Can you supply pipe in custom or non-standard lengths?
Often, yes. Let us know the diameter and length you need. Note that pipe over 10'6" requires flatbed freight and a quote.
Comparison
- Schedule 40 vs. light-wall fence pipe — Schedule 40 is a heavier wall/weight class for stiffer posts and tougher applications.
- Schedule 40 vs. SF40 (SPS-40) — Schedule 40 is full-weight schedule pipe; SF40/SPS-40 is typically a high-strength alternative engineered for strength-to-weight performance (spec approval required).
- Domestic vs. Import Schedule 40 — both meet ASTM F1083; Domestic is offered to satisfy Made-in-USA requirements and additional federal specification language.
