Make a strong, professional-grade terminal connection with galvanized tension bars. Choose the bar length to match your fence height and the width (5/8″ or 3/4″) to suit the duty level of your project.
Why Choose This
- Straight, uniform stretch — Distributes load across multiple diamonds for consistent fabric alignment
- Durable zinc protection — Galvanized steel stands up to weather and job-site handling
- Versatile — Works on terminal posts, gate uprights, and panel frames

Installation
With the fabric hung on the line, find the end “picket” formed by the first full diamond. Slide the tension bar down through that edge from top to bottom. Wrap tension bands around the terminal post (bevel toward the fabric), insert the bar into the bands, and tighten bolts evenly from bottom to top. For an easier, straighter pull before banding off, many crews use a Puljak Type B Fence Puller or a 36″ fabric stretcher bar with a come-along to pre-tension the mesh.
Buying Guide
- Pick the width: Choose 5/8″ for most residential work; step up to 3/4″ for commercial/heavier loads.
- Match the height: Order a bar that matches your fence height (e.g., 6′ fence → 72″ bar).
- Pair with the right bands: Residential jobs often use flat bands; heavier jobs typically use beveled bands. See flat galvanized tension bands for residential setups.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What’s the difference between a tension bar and a stretcher bar?
- A tension bar becomes part of the fence and is banded to the terminal post. A stretcher bar is a reusable tool used to pull the fabric tight before you band off.
- How many tension bars do I need?
- One tension bar for every terminal fabric edge: each end post, each side of a corner, and each gate/frame edge that receives fabric.
- Should the bar be the same height as the fence?
- Yes—match the bar length to the fence height for full engagement across the fabric.
- Will a 5/8″ bar work on commercial jobs?
- 5/8″ is commonly used on residential. Commercial/heavier use typically calls for a stiffer 3/4″ bar.
- Can I use the same bar on a gate?
- Yes. Tension bars are often used to attach fabric to gate uprights and panel frames.
Comparison
Option | Strengths | Considerations | Best For |
---|---|---|---|
5/8″ Galvanized Tension Bar (this item) | Economical; easy handling; residential grade | Less stiff than 3/4″ | Residential fences, gates, panels |
3/4″ Galvanized Tension Bar (this item) | Higher rigidity for heavier loads | Heavier, higher cost | Commercial/industrial fences & gates; tall panels |
Stretcher Bar (Tool) | Provides temporary pulling force during install | Not a permanent component | Pre-tensioning fabric before banding off |

No digging
I used 100 of these tension bars to slide into my chain link fence to prevent my dog from digging under the fence. The bars slide in easily, drop down further if she digs, and do not break or bend. AND THEN even with shipping costs, these were by far more economical than anywhere else I looked for the same thing or at any other options for pet defense for the amount needed. I will be ordering a couple hundred more to complete the job. (HUGE amount of fencing.)
